There are really only two things to remember when it comes to organizing:
- Surround yourself with what you love (or truly need) .. the rest is clutter.
- Everything should have a (smart) home.
That’s it.
It’s that simple. (I didn’t say easy! But it is simple. And doable.)
Yes, there are organizing pro strategies I use for my clients and myself, but it all boils down to these two things.
And both pertain to everything: HOME, WORK and LIFE:
HOME: If you don’t love it or need it, get rid of it. What remains is what should have a smart (categorized, well-contained, etc.) home.
WORK: Take a look at your calendar and to do list. Just like your home – if you don’t love it (or truly have to do it), get rid of it. Do the remaining to do’s have a specific place to go? (Keeping in your head is not an option!)
LIFE: What do you love and not love about your day to day in general? Are you giving what you truly love and need most a home on your calendar?
Integrating these two principles into home, work AND life is key because your home can be in order but if the way you’re working or living is sloppy, it can totally deplete you.
TAKE ACTION:
Choose one area where clutter has creeped in and apply the ‘surround yourself with what you love’ + ‘everything should have a home’ principles:
Examples:
Miscellaneous (junk!) drawer in kitchen: Get rid of what you don’t love or need. Then determine which specific items will be housed in that drawer (contain with drawer organizer, label each section) and which items need to be placed in another home.
Multiple to do lists: Designate one specific home for your to-do’s, and if you don’t truly have (or want) to do it, cross it off.
Unfulfilling calendar: Add something to your calendar at least weekly that you’ll look forward to: coffee with a friend (one that leaves you feeling energized, not depleted), yoga (even if at home for 10 minutes), mani/pedi, favorite hobby, fun podcast. Make room by getting rid of something on your plate you don’t love or absolutely have to do.
Start looking at everything you bring into your home – and life – using these two principles. It can be pretty powerful!
